ESCAP East and North-East Asia Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Korea (MOFA) co-organized a meeting between the MOFA and international organizations in ROK on 26 June 2014 in Seoul.
Deputy Minister Shin Dong-ik made an opening remarks, and Kilaparti Ramakrishna, Head of ESCAP-ENEA and Kim Moon-hwan, Director-General for International Organizations Bureau co-chaired the meeting.
The meeting was attended by 17 international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Seoul Policy Center, the UN Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN APCICT), the World Food Programme (WFP) Seoul Office, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Korea, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Seoul.
This was one of a series of meetings MOFA plans to have to engage international organizations on a regular basis. The last meeting had taken place between the heads of ROK missions to international organizations and representatives of international organizations in the ROK, which was the sideline of the meeting of heads of the ROK’s overseas diplomatic missions in April 2014.
From the Ministry, some 17 officials from eight divisions such as the United Nations Division, the Human Rights and Social Affairs Division, the Humanitarian Assistance Division, the G20 and Economic Organizations Division and the Climate Change and Environment Division attended.
Participants shared the view that the meeting served as a useful opportunity for the ROK and the international organizations to seek ways to communicate smoothly and boost cooperation between them. The Foreign Ministry aims to establish these meeting as a mechanism to play an important role in strengthening global cooperation and partnerships.
