October 24 is celebrated as the day marking the founding of the UN Charter all around the world. The East and North-East Asia Office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is organizing a series of celebration events for the UN Day this year throughout October, in collaboration with other UN agencies, civil groups and foundations in the Republic of Korea.
On 6 October, the Office participated in Songdo Run, a marathon race in Incheon, promoting the core UN value of diversity and multiculturalism. Under this theme, staff and family members from the UN offices ran together with participants of the Songdo Marathon from all walks of life.
Several youth groups from the Incheon International Relations Foundation, MACK (Movement for the Advancement of the Cultural Diversity of Koreans) Foundation and Friends of UN also joined the race in support of international exchange and cultural diversity.
Also, in the spirit of the UN’s work toward improving and maintaining international peace and security, 2013 UN World Peace Festival is jointly organized by Incheon Bridge Corp., Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and ENEA Office on 19 October.
Highlights of the programme include a concert, a cruise tour and fireworks over the Incheon Bridge, which is one of the longest fixed-link sea crossings in the world and the front gate connecting Incheon International Airport and the mainland of the country.
On UN day, there will be a special briefing on the UN and ESCAP at G-Tower, Songdo where participants have the opportunity to meet UN officers. Nearly 100 audiences, aged 11-13 and children of Korean War veterans with multicultural backgrounds will visit the ENEA Office as part of the “Global Children Festival with UN International Boys and the Descendants of Korean War Veterans,” organized by the International Leaders Union. The Festival aims to celebrate and remember the 60th anniversary of the UN forces’ participation in the Korean War.
